Small Share, Big Voice

My background has always inspired me to stay true to myself, and help others. By attending the Art Institute of Indianapolis, I have stayed true to myself, in aspiring to become involved in the fashion industry. With graduation just around the corner I was lucky to find a way that I could incorporate helping others. Fair trade was introduced to me in a business planning class, from that point on I knew that the boutique I have always wanted on Purdue's campus would carry fair trade.

Fair trade is about knowing the faces behind the production, and what the artisans go through on a daily basis to support themselves. Many of the products we wear on a daily basis are produced in sweat shops overseas, or by employees who are underpaid. Fair trade is a way to support the artisans by paying them with fair wages, which empowers them,
because often they lack alternate sources of income.

By carrying fair trade clothing, and accessories in my store on Purdue's campus, it will be a small share of the production that is taking place today, but a step in the right direction for helping be the big voice of fair trade.

English Experience

English was one of the first general education classes that I took at the Art Institute of Indianapolis. We had to do journal entries every week, about a topic of the teachers choice, and use certain vocabulary words in each entry. This was one of my least favorite assignments I had to do for the class, because I felt like my creativity was limited to the topics of her choice. I feel I would have been more interested if I were able to write about something I actually wanted to.

One great thing about this class was we were always given chances to correct our papers that we turned in, this was nice for me because I could see my mistakes and revise them and learn from them.  My favorite project in the class was writing about a store in the area that pertained to my major. We had time to go to the store while we were in class, having in class time to work on the assignment was also a plus. The closest clothing store to the pyramids that I could think of then was the Goodwill outlet store, on 86th and Georgetown. The criteria of the paper was basically to use all our sense and describe the store, so that if someone had never been there they would know what it would be like. My paper turned out well, I talked about how the store smelled like old musky clothes, and how the clothes were stacked in bins that the customer had to rummage through.

Overall English class was a positive experience for me, there were minor things that I would change, but I feel that the knowledge I gained outweighed the negative things about the class.

General Education Meltdown!

Biology
Currently I am taking Biology online. This class has been easier than my previous online class Business Law, because the instructor is helpful, and is engaged in our work. Yet today I am having a minor meltdown!

Meltdown
The entire class has to do the same project. The project is to wrap three leafs in tin foil and watch the progression of chlorophyll over the next three weeks. So when I went home over the weekend I wrapped three plant leaves in foil to prepare for the next week of class. Then I realized that I would not be there on Fridays to uncover the leafs and take pictures of them. Not to mention we had a large storm blow through and one of the leafs tin foil blew away. So when I got back to Indianapolis I decided to cover three more leafs on a bush outside my apartment, just to be fully prepared. When I got back from my internship today someone had taken the tin foil off! So I went to Walmart and bought a plant that will sit in my room in order to do this experiment!

Third Times a Charm
Overall I have learned a lot from this class in just the first week. I hope my experiment turns out all right! Third times a charm! Living in the heartland (at home) has proven once again to make life less complicated!
